Cross-country skiing in the Dolomites on the Seiser Alm

Cross-country skiing fun on Europe's largest alpine pasture in South Tyrol

For those who want to go cross-country skiing in South Tyrol, you've come to the right place. The Seiser Alm is part of the Dolomiti Nordicski area and the cross-country skiing paradise in the Dolomites. The 80-kilometer-long cross-country trail network stretches across the entire area of 56 square kilometers and from 1,700 to 2,200 meters above sea level. The trails on the largest alpine plateau in Europe offer stunning views of the Langkofel, Plattkofel, and Schlern mountains. They are double or quadruple groomed and offer a variety of difficulty levels. From Spitzbühel to Hartl, you can explore the largest alpine plateau in Europe on cross-country skis in either the skating or classical cross-country skiing style.

You can reach the cross-country skiing paradise of the Seiser Alm in South Tyrol either by bus or by cable car in Seis am Schlern. There are no additional costs for transporting equipment on either the bus or the cable car. Only the use of the trails is subject to a fee.

Getting to the Dolomite cross-country ski trails on the Seiser Alm

From early December to April, you can take the Seiser Alm cable car to the start of the cross-country ski trail. The Nordic Center is located directly at the top station of the cable car, and the trail starts from there, heading towards Ritsch. In Ritsch, you will find the starting point for almost all of the cross-country ski trails. From Ritsch, you can access any of the trails except for the Monte Pana trail, which is rarely used and may not always be open. If you are unable or unwilling to ski the Nordic Center - Ritsch route, you can take a bus from the Kompatsch parking lot directly to the starting point in Ritsch. The trails are marked with varying levels of difficulty, ranging from easy to challenging. Ski rental shops can be found at the valley station, the top station, and in Kompatsch if you need to rent equipment for your planned ski. Start your cross-country ski adventure now on one of the Seiser Alm's trails!

For the use of the perfectly groomed 80 kilometers of cross-country skiing trails, a cross-country skiing fee must be paid. Those who need a day ticket (10 euros) have the opportunity to purchase the cross-country skiing fee at the so-called "Loipencherrif" at the Ritsch turnstile. Those who plan to go cross-country skiing more often have various packages to choose from. The cost of cross-country skiing on the Seiser Alm in the Dolomites is somewhat complicated. Here you will find all prices for winter 2024/2025 listed simply and clearly in a table. The Nordic Pass itself is available on site or is already included in various offers from the Seiser Alm cross-country skiing hotels (see below).

The Nordic Pass

There are 3 different types of Nordic Passes: Nordic Pass 3 in 7, Nordic Pass 7, and Nordic Pass 14. With each Nordic Pass, you have unrestricted use of the shuttle buses of the following lines:

  • Line 1
  • Line 2
  • Line 3 and 3A
  • Line 5
  • Line 15 and
  • Line 11 (Almbus)

The Nordic Pass 3 in 7 allows unlimited access to the Alpe di Siusi Gondola and the Seiser Alm Express (line 10) for a choice of three days within a seven-day period. In contrast, the Nordic Pass 7 and Nordic Pass 14 include unlimited use of both services for the entire validity of the pass. The Nordic Pass 3 in 7 is ideal for those who want to practice cross-country skiing on the Seiser Alm flexibly, without using the cable car every day.
